Dartmouth's social life really takes place on campus rather than out in
the bars and restaurants. The older students go out to the restaurants
and bars a great deal, but the younger ones stay mostly on campus. The
campus is very integrated with the town, so it is easy to pop over to a
pub for a beer on a Friday night. There is a great cafe system in
Hanover, with lots of unique cafes to meet friends for a latte. Students
are always studying at the Dirt Cowboy cafe, where you can have anything
from a cappucino, freshly made croissant or carrot cake, to fresh
squeezed celery tomoto juice of a smoothie. The more literary minded folk
congregate in the basement cafe of Rosey Jeke's which is slightly more
bohemian. The restaurants are few, but include a sushi bar, Thai
restaurant with painfully slow service, some American pub food, and a
delicious Italian restaurant. The bar is mostly the Irish bar Murphy's
where everyone loves to congregate. Although I never participated in the
Greek system, I did attend Greek parties, because they really comprise
the core of the social system at Dartmouth and parties abound every
weekend. Dartmouth is such a small cozy place that people tend to form
great groups, and a fun event is always to be had.
