Dartmouth is nestled in the adorable upper vally of New Hampshire, where
life is tranquil and safety concerns are more about raccoons going
through trash cans than about more sordid concerns of the world. Because
the campus is quaint and the architecture charming, housing options are
interesting and the building are very nice. Dartmouth also has one of the
most amazing internet systems in the country, and so rooms are outfitted
in a very high-tech manner. If students are looking for off-campus
housing, it is very expensive and difficult to find. Hanover is a small
town, and housing goes quickly. Grad students are often forced to find
housing across the river in Vermont, in Norwich, where housing costs are
also exorbitant.
The campus itself is adorable, the central green is a great community
area. In the springtime, the green is a motley area with students playing
frisbee, listening to music, throwing picnics, and furiously engaging in
reading for courses or emails via ethernet. The river is close by, and
attracts a lot of students in the spring and summer term. The dining
halls offer many opportunities, even for vegetarians and night owls. On
Saturdays, there is even a jazz bar open for drinks and late night snacks
in the student center.
IF a student is looking for high class shopping, and quick access to the
city, Dartmouth is not the place. Although there are lots of little
boutiques, Dartmouth is isolated in the Northeast in the forest where
skiing is more possible than shopping.
This being said, the quality of life is very high at Dartmouth.
