College Hill where Brown, RISD, and a wonderful old colonial
neighborhood are located above the business district of Providence, and
the tidal basin of Narraganset Bay is a a beautiful quiet campus
setting. Housing opportunties abound on the Hill both on campus and
off, as well as in the greater Providence area, depending on which
experience a Brown graduate student wishes to have; e.g., on-campus
graduate housing is great for younger single grad students, while older
students with families may prefer to live in the surrounding suburbs
where children can attend quality non-urban public schools. Nearby off
campus housing opition range from a room in an 18th century house
shared with 3-4 other Brown/RISD students, to private apartments in
nineteenth-century carriage houses, or modern apartment buildings.
Brown's Andrews House provides health care services 24/7, and in
extreme cases when required ambulance service to local teaching
hospitals located on the opposite side of the downtown area. Laundry,
parking, and out-door recrecation are amply available on campus, or in
the predominatly residential college hill neighborhood surrounding the
Brown campus. The Brown/RISD van service offers students, faculty, and
staff safe and convenient transportation around College Hill. The
greater Providence Buss service provides access to all areas of the
city, including connections to the interstate buss service to downtown
Boston, Logan Airport, and NYC, AMTRAK service to NYC and Boston, and
commuter train service to Boston. Most of these transportation
services are located in the downtown area within a ten minutes walk
from the Brown green located in the heart of campus. Beyond that,
convient van and lemosine service is regularly available, or by
appointment for transportation to Green International airport about a
15 minutes ride from several locations on campus.
