Yale has an incredible amount of prestige with employers, so much prestige that
the employer eagerly comes to Yale for recruiting purposes. However, I
personally found Yale's Undergraduate Career Services unhelpful. I wish someone
had made clear to me that to be "employable" after college meant I would have had
to intern with a company while still IN college. This is not always the case,
but it always helps to have something to put on a resume before one's senior year
approaches. It adds credibility. As a senior, I saw many job opportunities in
front of me; unfortunately, the Yale UCS only channels the type of "high-powered"
jobs for which Yalies are supposedly tailored (Read: I-Banking, Consulting, Asset
Management, etc). Otherwise, for those English and History majors, UCS offered a
plethora of humanitarian, "I-want-to-save-the-world" career paths for "all the
other students," like "Teach for America" and the Peace Corps. I want to know
why UCS never held a massive career forum, cataloging the A to Z's of careers,
bringing insiders in to discuss a vast range of careers, from Advertising and
Accounting, to Xylophone Player for the New York Philharmonic to Zoo-Keeper.
