If you aren't Greek, you are shut out of a lot. But, there were very
few times when a student was kept out of a party because they weren't a
member of the frat. There is a very strong social structure; the five
sororities and fifteen fraternities have their own hierarchy. The line
isn't drawn between Greeks and non Greeks. It is more like non Greeks,
cool Greeks, so-so Greeks, and nerdy Greeks. Again, for the most part,
W&L is as inclusive a school as you can imagine in a town that one
scholar called, "The Confederacy in Exile." In terms of drinking, one
might be tempted to think that beer pours from the faucets (which, in
frat, I think it did). That isn't much of an overstatement. If W&L
were a middle aged man, the best case would be that he likes his liqour
and the worst case would be that he is an abusive alcoholic. Either
way, it is hard to ignore drinking as a problem. The school is stuck
in a sticky situation. If it allows boozing on campus it is liable,
but if it kicks everybody off, then kids will go to the country to
drink and be more likely to get themselves killed. I wouldn't want to
be in the Dean's shoes.
