A lot of freshman get their own dorms, but they can be small closets.
Overall, it is a beautiful area..as John Elrod, the late university
president said, "An oasis in the shenandoah valley." It is hard to
take the history and architecture of the school for granted. Most
students are cognizant of how lucky they are to be there. While the
sports teams aren't usually very good, they are always an option and
students can always participate in intramurals. W&L's reputation
always brings in the best speakers, from senators to supreme court
justices to even, hallelujah, the producer of the Simpsons, so students
have a wide array of lectures to choose from. The school also makes an
honest attempt to bring in some wonderful theatre and music groups, and
the University theatre usually hits with some of its repetoire.
The Honor System makes the place fairly safe and secure. While some
townies do like to pick fights with undergrads, I cannot recall any
major crimes on campus (though sexual assault is a thorny issue,
especially since it doesn't fall under the umbrella of the honor
system). But I have left books and bags up on campus, in the library
(which is, like just about every building and room, open 24 hours) and
found them in the same place the next day. The Honor System is
wonderful, as is Lee's Speaking Tradition, where passerbys are expected
to say Hello as they walk past each other. This tradition is in
somewhat of a decline, but it does exist and is utilized by most
professors and students.
