Social life is great! As a freshman or sophomore one might choose to
get into Greek Life but this certainly is not the ONLY option for
someone who wants to have fun on a Friday night. If you do happen to
choose Greek life, fraternity and sorority events will abound including
formals, cocktails, philanthropic events, etc. Outside of Greek Life
there are many other parties held by athletic teams, groups, etc.
Additionally Villanova runs "Late Nite" which is a Friday and Saturday
night party at Connelly Center with food, dancing, comedians,
hypnotists, magicians, etc. The Campus Activities Team plays movies
Thurs-Saturday nights as well as sponsors activities such as "Siblings
Weekend" and weekend trips to DC, New York, etc. Additionally there are
retreats and hundreds of campus clubs like Ambassadors, Student
Government Association, The Villanovan, Orientation and Special
Olympics. (Villanova hosts the Special Olympics Fall Festival for
Pennsylvania each November. It is a major event on campus each Fall and
I highly recommend that you get involved!).
Football games are fun to attend but the hottest ticket is for the
Men's and Women's basketball games! The women were the 2003 Big East
Champions after upsetting UConn's winning streak. The men's team has
struggled as of late but with a new coach it seems that there is a lot
to be excited about. Attending these games is awesome- the Big East and
Phildelphia Big Five creates an intense and spirited environment all
winter long. Perhaps we'll relive a 1985 NCAA Men's Hoops Championship
soon!? Keep in mind ALL sports at Villanova are all extremely
competitive and offer a great way to spend some free time. For example,
the Women's soccer team won the Big East Championship and made it to
the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2003. For those who don't make
Varsity there is an enormous and very popular intramural sports
program.
Aside from the sports, there is always a lecture or seminar being held
by one of the colleges, with neat and celebrated speakers sharing their
knowledge and experiences. Opportunities to get involved in music are
also widespread, including the Villanova Singers and Villanova Voices,
as well as Pastoral Musicians, Dance Team, and Stage Crew. There are
also tons of Cultural Groups like the Japanese Club, Black Cultural
Society, Armenian Student Club and Native American Students
Association. VOlunteering oriented clubs are also very popular
including Project Sunshine, Habitat for Humanity and Spring Break
Mission trips.
If sticking around on campus doesn't suit someone Philadelpia is a
short train or car ride away. Philly has museums, South Street, good
eats, great sports, and all the other stuff that comes with huge
cities. In addition to Philly, another frequented off campus spot is
the King of Prussia mall, the second largest shopping center in the
country. This is also home to an enormous theatre complex and is about
a 15 minute drive from campus.
Definitely plenty to do on and off campus!
