Vassar has long been known for its liberal, artsy crowd, though lately
the college has been admitting preppier, "Abercrombie & Fitch"
students. However, the social life at Vassar remains a bit quirky, even
as the incoming classes are becoming more mainstream. There is no Greek
system at Vassar; parties are held in upperclassman housing, and each
dorm sponsors an all-campus party each year (Harvest Ball, Bi-Dormal
Formal, "Pimps & Hoes" and "Cowboys and Catholic Schoolgirls" are all
names of dances ranging from the traditional to the bizarre).
ViCE, Vassar College Entertainment, strives to plan enjoyable college-
wide social events, and uses its funding to bring entertainers to
campus. In the past, Ani DiFranco and The Roots have performed, and
this year Rufus Wainwright is coming to campus.
There is a dance club and bar on campus, called Matthew's Mug, or more
commonly, simply "The Mug". The Mug usually plays the average mix of
dance music and hip-hop, but various theme nights have included
trance/techno and karaoke.
Off-campus, students can eat at area restaurants, see a band at The
Chance (a small venue nearby), or grab a bite to eat at the Collegeview
Deli (a very popular deli across the street with great food). Though
off-campus opportunities are rather limited, students have plenty to
choose from on campus, with the Mug, campus clubs and activities,
(somewhat poorly-attended) sports games, and campus parties. The
drinking scene seems pretty big, though by no means must one drink to
have fun.
Prominent speakers often visit the campus; in the fall of 2003, Tom
Hanks lectured, photographer Emmet Gowin gave a talk, and novelist
Russell Banks read from his upcoming novel.
Overall, life at Vassar is rich and fulfilling, both academically and
socially.
