Quality of Life Survey
Full-time undergraduate program The Vassar campus is GORGEOUS and well-maintained. It is park-like and spacious, covering 1,000 acres of land. Half of that land is the "Vassar Farm", where field research and educational programs are conducted. Dorms are beautiful, and students are guaranteed housing for all four years. There are 9 regular residence halls, one cooperative house (Ferry House), as well as Terrace Apartments and Town Houses for seniors. Students have several choices when it comes to dining. ACDC (All Campus Dining Center) is the main dining hall, and while food is decent, it becomes repetitive after awhile. The salad bar is good, and there is a great stir-fry vegan station. The Retreat, a snack bar, is quite popular- it is open until 11 each night and serves sandwiches, burgers, ice cream, salads, and all kinds of other snacks. During the daytime, students can visit the Kiosk, which is a Starbucks-serving cafe, complete with delicious desserts. Students can also visit the cafe in the Aula, part of Ely Hall (the geography & geology building). Athletes and those willing to walk up the hill to the fitness center can eat at the Atrium Juice Bar, which serves healthier (and more expensive) choices of sandwiches and special pizzas, as well as smoothies and fresh squeezed juices. In the basement of the library, studying students can go to Matthew's Bean, another cafe. A new option on campus is the Student Center above ACDC, which is home to yet another cafe, a Java City. Poughkeepsie is not a college town, despite being home to 3 schools (Vassar, Marist College, and Dutchess County Community College). The immediate area around Vassar is a bit run-down, though fairly safe. One can find a variety of decent restaurants to grab dinner at, and most of them accept V-Card (a sort of debit account for Vassar students). Most students stay on campus, though a trip to New York City is rather quick and easy (a 1hr, 40min train ride away). The campus is quite safe; security is active, and ID cards are needed to enter buildings. The students seem to exist in what is popularly called the "Vassar Bubble"-- the safe, ideal bubble of collegiate life, removed from the outside world.
