There is a very strong greek system on Vanderbilt's campus that
dominates Vandy's social scene, especially in the first year and a
half. However, since the fraternities and sororites are not residential
(only the top officers are allowed to live in the houses), you do not
have to be in the system to feel a part of the social scene. Rush takes
place in the second semester in order to allow plenty of time for new
students to acclimate to the new school before undergoing that process.
Most students at Vanderbilt date, and much of the dating revolves around
greek life and the football games.
There are many great restaurants within walking distance of Vanderbilt.
They vary from quick lunch places to chain restaruants, to eclectic
places and fine dining establishments. SATCO (San Antonio Taco Company)
is a student favorite. There are also several bars located near
campus. The recently revitilized downtown area of Nashville also has a
great selection of bars, clubs and restaurants.
Vanderbilt also has a few committess that are dedicated to bringing
great talent to the campus. Many concerts (Dave Matthews, Red Hot Chili
Peppers) take place in the gymnasium and there is also a week-long event
called Rites of Spring that brings college bands to the school for
several days in a row. Vanderbilt has also had fantastic speakers such
as Spike Lee, Madeline Albright, and countless others.
Vanderbilt is part of the SEC, so it competes at the National level.
The football team has been in a loosing rut practically forever, so
there is limited excitement surrounding those games. Students do
however have great access to tickets and large crowds will attend at
least some portion of most games. Basketball games are also popular and
Memorial Gym is a fantastic place to watch a game, especially this
year.
