Quality of Life Survey |
| Undergraduate Program |
Housing: Housing at Vanderbilt is excellent. Vanderbilt continuously
updates its housing ; every year that I was in attendance a dorm was
under renovation. Most students live on campus. It is required that
you live on campus all four years but you can apply to live off campus
and are generally approved by the senior year. Housing options include
single rooms to full apartments shared by six students.
Campus: The Vanderbilt campus is beautiful. Most people who visit the
school on a sunny spring day fall in love with it. It is comprised of a
mix of old and new buildings, most of which are lovely to look at, but a
few are not. The grounds are meticulously kept. The campus is
contiguous and self-contained and you can easily walk from one end to
another.
Facilities: The facilities are very good overall. There are plenty of
computer labs (though you really should have your own) and there are
many multi-media classrooms. The student center was recently remodeled
and is very nice. It includes several dining options (discussed below)
and the bookstore. The bookstore carries all books for all classes. It
is very convenient to all areas of campus and always very easy to figure
out exactly what you need for all classes. The bookstore also sells all
sorts of Vandy gear (shirts, license plates, etc). Most importantly,
the bookstore and all on-campus dining accept the Commodore Card which
is a debit card. Also, Vandebilt has a fairly new and very lage rec
center that is awesome. It includes a swimming pool, circuit weight
training, cardio equipment and exercise classes. There are several
indoor and outdoor tennis courts adjacent to the rec center.
Dining: Vanderbilt changes its dining options frequently, so I don't
know what is there now. It always has a main cafeteria that is open for
most of the day and for dinner and several other food options that are
located throughout the campus. In the past it has had a Taco Bell, a
Dairy Queen, a Bagel Sandwich Place, a pizza place, and a sub place at
the same time. Overall the food is good, but like anything you'll
probably get tired of it after the first couple of years. Fortunately
by that point you can live in a dorm room that has a kitchen.
Neighborhood: Vanderbilt is in Nashville, but it is not within the
downtown area nor is it within walking distance to the downtown area.
Vanderbilt is located on West End Avenue, which is one of the main roads
in Nashville and the immediate area is comprised of single family homes,
student-oriented apartments, restaurants and retail.
Crime & Safety: Vanderbilt takes the safety of its students very
seriously. You can always request that a security volunteer escort you
from one place to another on campus. Vanderbilt also has one of the
largest police forces in Tennessee. They generally seem to be more
concerned about keeping the campus safe than busting the students.
There is occasionally crime in the surrounding area. Vanderbilt has a
system in place that notifies the student body when these incidents
occur.
