Admissions for Vanderbilt seemed to me a fairly straight forward
process. The application was cheerfully color-coded and the sections
were well-organized. Essay topics were of the garden variety, with some
more spice coming into play for special scholarship applications.
Interviews, as I recall, were completely optional. I sat down with a
local alumnus and chatted for half an hour or so about their
experiences, what I was hoping for in my college experience, etc.
(Again, special scholarship interviews were a more strenuous and
interesting process, and had a greater role to play in decision-making.)
I would characterize Vandy as "highly selective" in terms of academics
and extracurriculars. Perhaps the greatest disservice, however, is
students who don't apply because they are scared away by the sticker
price of tuition. I wish I could tell everyone who was interested to
not let that stop them. Vandy had a terrific program of grants, loans,
and work study that met the need of almost everyone I knew. And not
only that, but a huge percentage of the school is there on some form of
financial aid, a fact that sort of surprised me, given the old image of
the school as a well-moneyed institution.
