The University of Wisconsin use to be a slam dunk for most aspiring
high school grads, but now that's not the case. Particularly from high
performing schools in Minnesota and the Chicago area the requirements
for entrance have increased drastically. However, if you are in state,
while it has become much more difficult to get in, it's not bad. Out
of staters, those not from WI, MN or IL get a premium added to their
applications because of the high tuition they must pay. Other things
that will help are: Parents being an Alum and being from an under
represented minority.
As far as the application goes, the essay I believe is rarely looked at
and if it is, it's only for borderline cases. The high school
transcript is scrutinized and things like AP credits are definitely
weighted. Otherwise it's all class rank and GPA.
