Quality of Life Survey |
| Full-time BS program |
Excellent. UVA has an excellent quality of life with super facilities, a
beautiful campus, lots of attention paid to safety and security (with an
escort service present to pick up students and take them where they need
to go at night, both to and from classes/libraries and to and from
parties). Numerous dining halls provide a large variety of cuisines.
UVA has a CultureFest program every year that honors students from many
cultures all over the world (the program is organized and executed by
students). UVA also has many ethnic and cultural clubs that support and
promote students of their cultures and make them feel more at home. That
said, most students at UVA come from the South of the United States and
therefore reflect "Southern Culture" -- which has led to a startling
amount of racial segregation in entertainment activities, living areas,
dining halls, etc. Frequently UVA has a number of racial or bigotry
incidents, although I don't believe this is unusual for the South and
just reflects the general culture of the region. About 60% of UVA
students participate in some respect in Fraternity/Sorority life which
has both advantages and disadvantages. For many students, these
organizations provide a family away from home and the ability to tap into
national organizations (and become a member of national organizations)
that may be important for life. Furthermore, they provide social outlets
with their numerous semi-formals and formals events (dances/parties). On
the other hand, the Fraternities and Sororities are frequently associated
and involved in binge-drinking incidents that sometimes negatively impact
the university.
