UT is a school that is very strong in her own traditions. Since 80%+
students also come from Texas (a state that has no equal when it comes
to gung ho state spirit) there is a lot of social events with the Texas
theme. However, despite the gung ho school spirit, and state pride,
the students are very welcoming to students from all backgrounds (out
of state, international, etc.). This was very helpful to me as it gave
me a great insight very quickly to many people in the US.
One of the great aspects about UT is that it is in a town where one can
to a variety of people at a stone's throw. You can find yuppies,
country folks, hippy types, gays, lesbians, etc. This is not the case
in many colleges or towns in or out of Texas. Even though I was not
part of the Greek system, I had many friends who were Greeks, and I
could tell that the Greek societies were very strong.
Finally, Sixth Street (which is like Bourbon Street minus the alcohol
consumption on the streets) is a couple of miles from the campus. Here
one can hit the bars, listen to various types of live music, go
dancing, etc. In the past few years, the house music scene has also
developed on Sixth Street. However, Austin PD sees to it there is very
strict enforcement of the underage drinking laws. The university also
offers a cab-type service for her students during weekends.
As far as specific student favorites are concerned, they all revolve
around a keg of Shiner Bock. This goes hand in hand with college
sports (especially football).
