The Greek system at USC dominates the social scene and "The Row"
(Fraternity Row) is where most of the action is on Thursday, Friday,
and Saturday nights. As the sports program is very big,the entire
campus turns into a large party during home football games as alumni
come back to campus for tailgates. Students generall have a great deal
of school spirit and the university's famed "Trojan Family" is known to
be among the strongest alumni networks in the world.
Due to its location in auto-centric southern California, USC students
will typically need to drive to get to the more popular hangout spots
(although there are a few bars and clubs within walking distance).
Because the campus is only 1-2 miles from downtown L.A., students have
a great deal of access to some of the better bars and clubs in this
area, and many choose to drive 15-30 minutes to the Melrose area and
West L.A. (including Westwood, Santa Monica, and Brentwood) to party
Thurs/Fri/Sat.
USC features many on-campus events each year, including SongFest and
various events sponsored by the mandatory Student Programming Fee ($59
per year). USC is also one of a small number of schools that has an on
campus bar in the student union ("Traditions").
Many students find that campus involvement leads to finding a social
network. Whether major-specific, interest-specific, or lifestyle-
specific, the hundreds of student organizations on campus offer its
15,000 undergraduates a seemingly innumerable range of options
regarding social activities.
