USC touts its alumni network yet during probably the worst recruiting season in
at least a decade, it did not help me one bit. What surprises me is the type of
reputation USC holds among recruiters.
Investment Banks and Consulting firms are virtually non-existent at USC and
getting into one is really up to you as USC is hardly a targeted school. That
leaves marketing (not all that strong at USC) and IS (which these days is being
filled up more and more with true engineers rather than Business undergrad
wannabes). Entrepreneurship is a joke because it teaches you virtually no
applicable skills that you can sell to recruiters.
The career center is very poor as criticized to me first hand by recruiters. It
is in the basement of the student center with bare bones amenities. I believe
this immediately sets a poor mode for the recruiters during their interviews and
immediately puts students at a disadvantage.
Again, the resources are available at USC, but you have to be the individual
that goes the extra mile to juice it out of USC's facilities. It is not handed to
you by any means. This can work to your advantage since most USC students are
slackers and highly motivated individuals will certainly stand out.
