| Full-time undergraduate program |
The overall quality of life is good at Richmond. The campus is situated
in one of Richmond, VA's most prestigious neighborhoods, and it is a
beautiful campus. The architecture is nice, there is a lake in the
middle of campus, a large student center, and the buildings in which
classes take place are all a short distance away from the dormitories.
Upperclassmen have the option of moving into the university's own
apartments, situated on campus but a longer distance away from the
academic buildings than the dormitories. The apartments have two
bedrooms, two people to a room, with a living room, kitchen, and parking
spaces. The male and female apartments are situated near each other,
but each apartment is single-sex.
The dormitories, on the other hand, are single-sex dormitories. The
female dormitories are separated from the male dormitories by the lake
on separate sides of campus. Most of the students appreciated this, but
some students felt this made the social dynamics between men and women
even stranger. The dorm rooms are generally small, but some are quite
spacious. Depending on which building the dorm rooms are, one or two
bathrooms were conveniently situated on each floor. Anywhere from six
to twenty people shared a bathroom on the hall. Resident advisors were
helpful in making sure that their residents' concerns were addressed,
and there were also resident group activities to build friendships.
There is one dining hall on campus, which is connected to the student
center. The school has reasonable food, but it is not considered
fantastic. The cafeteria offered a variety of foods, with weekly
international menus, but it was not vegetarian or vegan-friendly.
Different meal plans could be purchased depending on how many times a
student eats in the cafeteria each week. There were several options for
take-out and delivery near campus.
Approximately 15-30 minutes away is downtown Richmond, which offers a
host of restaurants, cafes, shops, and cultural activities. Students
with cars could do some grocery shopping at Ukrops, which is a high-end
grocery store but the students in dormitories have limited cooking
facilities. There are also approximately three shopping malls within a
hour radius of campus, as well as the historic shopping district,
Carytown. While downtown Richmond is a bit more dangerous, especially
at night, the immediate area of the university is quiet, clean, and very
safe. Campus police are also on duty to provide additional security to
its students. A campus van is provided in the evening hours to
transport students from academic buildings to residence halls for
additional security and comfort. Very few security issues arose during
most students' four-year tenure at Richmond.
