The quality of on-campus housing varies widely. The newer dorms are
quite nice, although farther away from the center of campus (but yet
closer to the med school). Some rooms in the older dorms are
depressing, and it is possible to be placed in triples or quads (4
people in the same room). The three "Towers" are convenient, but the
rooms are depressingly pie (or perhaps coffin) shaped.
There is no real campus boundary. There are both pros and cons to
this. Pitt students become very involved in the Oakland community. On
the other hand, criminal and other negative elements can roam freely
throughout campus. It is not very safe, although knowledge and common
sense alleviate some of the danger. The facilities have improved a
lot. There are many dining options throughout Oakland, which makes it
much more convenient for off-campus students (and the choice is
incredible). The neighborhood itself is very interesting -- many bars,
ethnic restaurants, shops, etc.
