Penn has a large fraternity and sorority population. About 30% of it's
students are affiliated with them. It also has the tendency to be a bit
cliquey. Having said that, because it is a large school, most students
end up finding a good mix of people who are like them. Best place to
make friends is in the dorms - it is also easy to make friends in
smaller classes.
The most famous hang out bars on campus are Smokey Joe's, Mad for Mex
and Billy Bobs - they are all packed on weekends - but a valid I.D is
required (it must be a good fake)
There is also a club/lounge party scene that has recently developed,
more with the international crowd which likes to party downtown.
The frats and sororities tend to keep within themselves and have a lot
of house parties as well.
There are some great restaurants on campus as well as in the city and
you will bump into a lot of Penn students eating out in the city on the
weekends, especially at trendy (and expensive) places like Buddakan,
Alma de Cube and Cuba Libre.
All in all, Penn is a good mixture of a party school with students who
also work a lot. There is always something to do, even if you're not a
big partier in terms of community activities etc.
