The rumor on campus was that our dining services were ranked in the top
5 in the nation (by what ranking system I have no idea), but that didn't
stop me from being dissatisfied with the food. The bottom line is this:
cafeteria food is never going to be great. However, Penn did an
excellent job of supplying a good array of food, as opposed to just
chicken fingers and french fries everyday. Oftentimes, we had
specialties like mahi-mahi or baked salmon.
Penn is in the middle of West Philadelphia; an area that is improving,
but still needs a lot of work. The rule of thumb was to just be smart
about your choices. If you are ten blocks off campus at a party, don't
walk home by yourself at 3 in the morning. Occasionally, people would
get robbed, but I don't remember anyone being hurt. There are escorts
available to walk people home at any time of the night, and a shuttle
that runs from 430pm to 6am that will pick you up anywhere within a 12
block radius of campus.
There was an array of counseling services available at Penn, several of
which I sampled. There is an excellent women's center, along with a
large number of ready and available psychologists to let you talk out
your problems. The added pressure of performing at a school like Penn
makes it necessary to have resources like those.
Housing was also top notch. I didn't live in the Trump hotel, but
compared to other schools, the housing that Penn has to offer is a five
star hotel. I lived in three different on campus apartments during my
years at Penn, and one off campus house. The buildings are highly
secure and very well run. Occassionally there were rodents, but nothing
excessive.
