The family atmosphere of the university is supplemented by its rich
traditions and its omnipresent spiritual essence. The sense of
belonging to a more important 'whole' is what family is all about. I
certainly felt this at football games. I felt this in my dorm where
there was both an inhouse religious 'mother' and 'father' as well as
hallway Resident Assistant. I felt this in my dorm chapel as well as at
other dorms' chapels as well as the Sacred Heart Basilica and the
underlying crypt. I felt this at meal-times in one of the two on-campus
dining halls where nearly all the students eat and socialize. I felt
this during one fall break when I took part in an Environmental
Seminar, one organized by the campus Center for Social Concerns. I felt
this when I did a school-arranged externship in NYC during a spring
break, when I shadowed one Notre Dame alumnus who took me to Boston to
the headoffice for a day and was given a place to stay for the week by
another alumnus in midtown Manhattan. I really felt this during
graduation week when the senior class assembled at our holy Grotto,
each held candles, sang songs in unity and prayed.
