The Notre Dame alumni network is incessantly proclaimed to be one of the best.
This has been measured in numbers as well. I was once a Notre Dame Development
Department student caller who did follow-up for alumni donation campaigns. I
learned then that a higher percentage of ND alums give back to the university
than most others. Speaking to alumni on the phone before I was a bonafide
alumnus
was special for me. So many times the alumni would bring up memories of dorm
life, school traditions, coursework; etc. We felt such a cross-generational
connection just because of the university. The power of the alumni network is
what I believe is one of the top benefits of the university. Two personal
examples of how important beneficial alumni connections can be:
1) I strongly believe my first job at an international bank was thanks to the
fact that the head of department was an ND law grad. I noticed early on there
was
a decent number of ND grads in the group. I am grateful for that job since it
gave me real world financial training that I can use personally and
professionally for the rest of my life. Additionally, I remember saying in
interviews for that job that one main reason I wanted to work for them was to be
able work abroad someday. That was not a white lie to get the job and since
then,
this dream has come true.
2) I have been living in Belgium for a couple of years now. During an initial
interview for a bank job in Belgium, I spoke with an American hiring manager who
mentioned right off the bat that he liked that I was from ND. He is what we call
a 'subway alumni', one who supports the university, but did not go there. Did
you
know subway alums can join ND alumni clubs all over the country?
I attribute much of my post-graduation success to all that personal growth and
academic learning I did at Notre Dame. I never imagined I would have traveled to
so many states in the U.S. for work, moved to Belgium and learn to speak 2 more
languages, visited many places in Europe and have seen Russia by the age of 25.
