When I applied to Notre Dame, I really didn't do anything different than
I did for the other top colleges that I applied to. However, since
universities such as this one are getting more and more difficult to get
into there are a few things I would do if I had to apply again.
1. Have a priest or an alumnus write you an extra letter of
recommendation.
2. When you write you essay make sure to play up community and even
religion.
3. Do a lot of volunteer work.
4. Visit before you apply. If you still choose to apply definitely
reference that in your essay.
The admissions process is tough and so is selectivity. I feel, however
that ND really looks at the true person more than some other schools. I
know from friends that if you pester them and really show that you want
to be there and can back it up with good grades and scores, they will
look on that favorably. I know a transfer that did this even though
they told him it was a lost cause to get in Fall Semester and he got in!
Also take both the ACT and SAT. It is a midwestern school so many
applicats take the ACT (where as students in other areas of the country
have never heard of it) and I felt it was a lot easier so it could put
you ahead of the pack (there are many midwestern applicants) if you do
really well.
