Ironically, Las Vegas contributed to a very paradoxical social life. On-
campus, it was thriving with new discoveries by groups of like-minded
people. Downtown was lit up and crowds of night-lovers took advantage of
everything that was offered. But there was another side to Las Vegas: it
was not a large city, and as such, the outskirts were not far away. Many
social events were carried to the more distant edges of the city, where
individuals could be removed and alone. Many university students would
hold study groups in mountain camps, and others would seek hiding places
to escape. Many chose to drive for endless hours into the night's desert
to think. Some students would find their way to the bars and casinos,
searching for their romantic life to come to fruition. And some would
immerse themselves into extra-curricular activities such as student
clubs and other more refined, intellectual endeavors. Fraternities were
ever present and popular. Hazing was "in", but less for drama than for
fun. Some were "kidnapped" and blind-folded to be taken fifty miles into
the desert. There they were left to find the most imaginative way home.
Some returned before their kidnappers. After all had been done and said,
you knew you had been left with Las Vegas and her university impregnated
into your heart and soul for life!
