During the time mentioned, it was very econimical to go to school,
paying a mere $35.00 a credit hour. When UNLV was getting underway,
being one of the a smaller Universities, there was more interesting in
making it easier for students to become enrolled. Requirements for
admission varied, depending upon the department of interest, but
standard writing, reading, and mathematics assessments were made, and
evaluated. Once it was determined that a prospective student qualified,
he was appointed a counselor in his field who would direct his study
requirements. It was up to the student to register, purchase lab
materials and books, and attend the classes according to his time
schedule. These schedules were partly determined by the syllabus the
teacher presented to his class, the ability of the student to master the
subject, and/or the demands on class attendance.
