Amherst is a great town. With the 5 college consortium in the area, and
the greater bohemian-intellectual community of Northampton and Pioneer
Valley, the area attracts much in the way of cultural diversion
including great guest lecturers, world renowned authors, historians,
scientists and performers. In my 4 short years, I attended Allen
Ginsberg's last public performance of Howl, the Bell Curve debate
starring the scallywag Charles Murray(junk, racist science but great
debate), a Broadway performance of Guys and Dolls, Stomp, Dave Matthews,
Phish, Tori Amos, Taj Mahal, Joan Baez, Kurt Vonnegut, and Noam Chomsky.
Myriad other (*free!) event included an Indian folk dance performance,
classical music performances, Latin-American cultural events, Asian
cultural fairs, improve comedy, and great intramural sports.
