| Full-time undergraduate program |
U of I is run by the Greek system. To be honest, it is a party campus.
There are a lot of bars and the bar age is 19. Popular hang out spots
are often uncomfortably packed and a lot of the patrons are underage. U
of I is notorious for bing drinking and fraternity after-hour parties,
especially at the beginning and end of the academic year. It is easy to
become unreasonably involved in the party scene at U of I and easy to
draft focus away from academics. I see this as one of Illinois' major
problems which reflects in the Freshman and Sophmore drop out rates and
the large number of students who fall out of top programs like
Engineering and Business. The Greek system is a large contributor to U
of I's party scene.
Favorite bars on campus are CO Daniels and KAM's among others, although
this changes almost yearly. A lot of social venues cater to the greek
system while some also seemingly cater to sports fans, coffee types and
students originally from urban cities. U of I has a great scene for live
music and bands large and small travel through the twon frequently.
Also, the club scene has always been pretty good on and around campus.
There is nothing much to do off-campus.
One of the few alternatives to driking is the Krannert Center which I
miss badly as I now live in Chicago. U of I's theater program puts on a
good variety of performances at Krannert throughout the academic year
and large name performers and performances also stop there often. Be
sure to take advantage of Krannert Center while at Illinois.
In summary, there is no shortage of involvements for students taking
into account all the clubs, societies, greek system, sport teams, and
social venues at Illinois. However, new students should be cautious with
the party scene as it has proven the fate of many an Illini. Enjoy the
campus but keep in mind why your there.
