I lived in private housing for the duration of my time at U of I, so I
can't comment on the dorms or other housing. I loved the house I lived
in; though it was somewhat cramped it was pretty, had more than
adequate facilities and was in an excellent location on campus. I
don't think some dorm-dwellers could say the same; many dormitories are
very far away from the main campus buildings.
The Intramural Physical Education building had great facilities, though
it upset me that as a student I was expected to pay extra for group
fitness, aerobics classes, etc....
Safety was always an issue on the forefront of our minds. There were
regular attacks and other incidents on campus, which one would probably
expect in such a large community. I feel that the University did a
very good job to keep safety-awareness levels high and make students
aware of the availability of services such as rides home after dark.
Personally I only knew of one person who was ever assaulted on campus.
Some parts of the campus are very beautiful while other parts are
decidedly dumpy. However in recent years the University has really put
in effort to improve some of the less attractive areas, particularly
the main drag Green Street.
The campus is large, and while there are plenty of buses, the
preponderance of one way streets and the difficulty posed by trying to
drive around three large "quads" means that some bus trips across
campus can take 30 minutes. Also, some of the most popular bus routes
don't run later than 6 or 7 pm and I often found this to be a problem.
