U of I's career services, while I was there, could have been more helpful. While
many prestigious firms show up at Illinois, only a very select few students are
catered to. Most students need to take things into their own hands and press for
interviews independent of the University's efforts. Also, a heavy concentration
of the recruiters to Illinois are from Chicago, Indianapolis and St. Louis.
Students interested in working in cities outside of this, i.e. Los Angeles or New
York must find potential employers and handle the recruiting process on their
own. This may become very difficult while taking 4 - 5 courses and staying
socially active.
For the business college, a few consulting / banking companies attend campus
looking for analysts but the university's sweet spot for recruiting is definitely
accounting positions. Also, finance and accounting students should anticipate
competing with Engineering students for coveted Investment Banking and Management
Consulting spots. While firms know U of I is a great school for academics, many
of the most prestigious firms, especially from Chicago, stick to Northwestern and
University of Chicago to fulfill their hiring needs.
