The admissions process at U of I is pretty standard with heavy emphasis
on ACT / SAT scores and high school GPA's. I highly recommend writing
the optional essay, especially if applying to the Engineering or
Business Schools. In the essay, emphasize anything and everything that
will make you stand out from the pack in terms of past accomplishments
and achievements, especially non-academic in nature. I would also
recommend attending the camplus on a visit and talk to as many admission
directors / current students as possible about the admissions process
and the school in general. Nothing surpasses a campus visit in assessing
whether or not you are a match for a particular school. When speaking
with current students, try to draw as many complaints as possible out of
them as these points may leverage into big problems for yourself if
admitted. Often I see people concentrate too hard on getting into a
college rather than if the particular school really suits what they
expect out of an undergrade program.
