| Full-time undergraduate program |
Many of the programs at the University of Delaware are highly regarded in the
nation. The College of Engineering has incredible programs, which are also well
funded. The nursing programs have also gotten a lot of attention over the years
for academic credibility and the undergraduate business degrees have also
received some high marks.
In the political science program many changes have occurred in the past decade,
but during my time there were hardly any internship opportunities, if the
students even found out about them. My advisor, although an incredibly gifted,
knowledgeable, and friendly person, gave absolutely no guidance when it came to
career decisions. Despite visiting every semester for career help, my question
as to what I could do with my degree in international relations always received
the same answer: "oh, so many things..."
There is a job placement office on campus and a well-developed internet site
with daily job postings. In addition, students can apply for those jobs online,
be alerted when something of interest gets added to the career database, and set
up appointments for interviews with interested organizations. The Career
Services Center also provides tons of opportunities for career-related workshops
and sponsors numerous recruitment fairs throughout the year. In addition to
career-related workshops, students can attend other workshops, such as formal
dining etiquette and mock interviewing.
In general, I've found that UD's reputation has gone up significantly in recent
years. In fact, just recently employeers have been impressed with the fact that
I attended the school. My response has been met with, "University of Delaware,
really? I hear that's a great school." This is very promising!
Note to students studying engineering or business: Somewhere around 80% of all
companies are incorporated in Delaware, which is also the home to 3 of the
largest chemical companies in the world. Both undergraduate business and
engineering are well-funded programs that have vast amounts of recruitment
opportunities upon graduation. They also offer multiple scholarships from those
industries.
