Boulder has a great social life. The weekend starts on Thursday night,
and lots of people hit Pearl Street (an open-air mall) to go to the
bars. The West End of Pearl has a ton of little restaurants and bars
that are great. Rhumba has great carribbean/tropical drinks. Old Chicago
is popular for the many beer choices (over 100) and great pizza and
appetizers. Connor O'Neill's is the perfect little Irish pub.
Boulder has just about any type of food you could imagine, and lots of
the places are either fairly inexpensive to begin with or they have
deals for students. The Hill is also another place to hang out, with
bars, restaurants, and clubs. The legendary Sink (where Robert Redford
once worked) can't be missed. It's been there at least since the 1930s,
and it's still one of the most popular places in town.
For one of the most popular food options, Illegal Pete's has great
burritos, tacos, nachos, quesadillas, etc. It's like Chipotle but
better, and they give you a ton of food for a great price. There's one
location on the Hill and another at the east end of Pearl Street.
Either area is within walking distance or easily accessible by one of
the many clean, safe bus lines that go through town. Every student has a
bus pass included with their student fees, too, and this will also get
transportation to Denver International Airport.
I didn't find that there is so much of a dating scene. Lots of people do
date, but it seems like more people like to hang out in big groups with
friends.
There are a ton of different student activities (there's a list of all
the organizations on the CU website), so everyone should be able to find
something interesting to belong to if they choose. The Greek houses are
all on the Hill, and rush is a big thing. Lots of people do rush and
belong to one of the sororities or fraternities, but it was never
something I got into, and most of my friends didn't either.
Because we are so close to the mountains, many students take off Friday
(if they even have class - the business school doesn't hold classes on
Friday except for a few recitations) to go skiing or snowboarding.
The football games are always popular, too, even if the team isn't that
good. Saturday nights after football games are time for partying. I
don't really know how CU got the #1 party school ranking, though. It
never seemed to me like we were that crazy.
