Because I was an in-state student, CU has a set of criteria related to
GPA, high school classes, and test scores that if the minimum
requirements are met, admission is guaranteed. I remember the
application being fairly basic. An essay was required, but it could be
written about any topic of the student's choice, as long as there was
something in it that told how that student would contribute to diversity
at the university. If the students are in-state and the minimum
requirements are met, the essays are not even read. There was no
interview. Students can apply to the Colleges of Arts and Sciences,
Engineering, and Business.
My biggest piece of advice is that if a student thinks he or she has ANY
interest in being an undergraduate business student, apply to the
business school rather than arts and sciences. Chances of acceptance
when applying to join the freshman class are much higher than if you try
to switch schools once you are here. It is much easier to do an intra-
university transfer out of the business school than it is to transfer
into the business school. Students wanting to transfer into the business
school have to take three semesters worth of classes, including math and
economics, and those classes must be completed with a certain grade.
Only after these classes are completed can the student attend a
mandatory meeting and being the transfer application process, which is
bascially based on GPA. I was lucky enough to make it in my first try,
but I have many friends who went through two, three, four tries, and
some who gave up completely.
