Hyde Park is not big on bars (only a couple). They mostly represent a
meeting place between older students and teachers, who've been known to
argue vehemently about Plato, black space, and the politics of South
American countries. There are only a couple of fraternities and
sororities on campus (and aren't taken very seriously at all). There
are plenty of restaurants and the C-Shop on campus is as old as the
school. Every year there are winter festivals and the Homecoming game
is I think more popular amoung us alums than it is with the students.
Years ago, the then president scaled back sports and social life at the
U of C in favor of "the life of the mind." It has turned out some of the
finest scholars in the world.
