The campus architecture of the University of Chicago was modeled after
Oxford University in Britain. It's ivy-covered stone walls and spires,
coupled with the modern architecture of Mies Van Der Rohe, makes the
campus an envy of colleges around the country. While not known as
a "party" school, U of Cers can still have fun. Our Major Activities
Board is responsible for bringing entertainment acts to campus. The
extracurricular life is rich -- from a campus radio station to
intramural sports. Formerly a founder of the Big Ten and the Chicago
Bears, the U of C still sports a Division III football and basketball
team. Women also play a prominent role in extracurricular and varsity
sports. Also, the school as an incubator for the original Second City
Players [Ed Asner, then a student, was one of the founding troupe.]
Being deep in the heart of the inner city Chicago, the college is
surrounded by depressed areas. However, Hyde Park is a rich, vibrant
inter-racial community on the South Side of the City... with plenty of
movie theatres, a first class stage theater (Court Theatre), shopping,
and eating establishments. The student housing on campus consists of
nicely sized dorms (one with all single rooms and one in a former large
Lakefront hotel. The campus borders Lake Michigan. It has excellent
museums -- the Oriental Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry (the
site of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair), and the Smart Galleries. Full of
history and nostalgia, the U of C area is an excellent learning and
living environment.
