The University of Chicago is known as the teacher of teachers for the obvious
reason that among the elite schools, it sends perhaps the highest percentage of
its students to graduate and doctoral programs. This has been the tradition since
the time of Robert Maynard Hutchins.
Although a career center called CAPS has recently been added to make the school
more fashionable, most kids still pursue higher degrees. Andrew Abbott, in his
"Welcome to the University of Chicago" speech to incoming first-years, availble
at www.realuofc.org, sums up the anti-careerist/pro-education sentiments on
campus: "As far as the game for worldly success is concerned, it is over. You
have already won. That your future salary huge and your future job prestigious is
nearly a given." He goes on to say that considering where UofC kids are, and who
they are, they constitute the top 2% of a massive and American 18-year-old
cohert.
You get the gist; the University of Chicago is not overly concerned with career
prospects.
