You have to chose 3 colleges to apply to in order of preference. For my subject - history - you also had to submit 2 essays. They weed out a load of candidates at application form stage and then invite you to interview. This consisted of 2 interviews - one subject related (with 2 specialists in that field) and 1 'general' interview (with 1 senior academic). If you fail at the first college of your choice or they are already full then they have the option to put you into the 'pool' where the 2nd and 3rd colleges have the choice whether to interview you. All the other colleges can also go to the pool to look for candidates if they need them.
