It was your standard application plus a general essay, and it was generally known at the time that the essay probably wouldn't even be read unless you were on the borderline. No interviews were necessary, although after I was admitted but before I had made a decision, I was invited to lunch with the chair of the department (psychology) in which I ultimately majored. This special attention made me more sure about my decision to choose UCSB.
