Many of those admitted are National Merit Scholars and Regent scholars, so the competition is fierce. There is no interview required for admission, just one application that is filled out for the entire Univ. of CA system. As a large school, a lot of the admissions process is based upon the "numbers" i.e. SATs, AP scores, GPAs. Never fear though, there are also a lot of community college admits. I understand that there has been a change in the admissions policy for all of the UC campuses where those in the top 1% of their schools are automatically admitted.
