The city of Irvine has many great entertainment venues, but getting
to all of these venues requires a car, as public transportation is
pretty terrible. The Irvine Spectrum, Corona Del Mar in Newport
Beach, and the Block in Orange are favorite evening/weekend hang
out spots. For those willing to venture farther, cities like Los
Angeles, Las Vegas, or Tijuana are easily-reached weekend
destinations.
For those without a car, the Irvine campus does offer a significant
array of social outlets. Shopping, clubbing, and restaurants are
available in the Irvine Marketplace across the street from campus.
There is a vibrant collection of on-campus clubs and organizations
that can help students extend their social network. ASUCI, the
undergraduate student government, hosts a number of student
events with various themes. Many of the ethnic clubs also host
parties and festivals celebrating cultural events. The academic
clubs host socials, contests, and informational events. The real key
to building an active social life at UCI is involvement with many
on-campus clubs.
The Greek system has bounced back substantially since 2001
when I graduated. During my time at UCI there were too many
fraternities for the level of Greek interest, and at least 2 chapters
closed due to over-diluted Greek membership. However, the
re-colonization of the campus by young, strong, national fraternities
has brought interest in the Greek system back to healthy levels, and
the current number of chapters better matches the level of interest.
Being Greek does not have the same significance at UCI that it has
at more venerable East Coast schools. The city of Irvine bars
fraternity houses. However, Greek houses have opened in UCI's
on-campus themed housing complexes. This development
promises to serve as an anchor for enhanced stature of Greek life
on campus.
