The school has a reputation for being "academic," and this certainly
holds true for the social life. The greek system does allow for some
popular events, but usually not extremely close to campus. This is
becuase the greek housing is almost exclusively in campus housing, which
has a dry party policy, i.e. no alcohol. But the fraternities
especially SAE, throws great parties. They rent huge buses and have
them running from the gym to their party all night long. They do this
primarily so students don't drink and drive, which is really great. The
gym is a staple in the UCI social scene. The facilities are amazing.
The boast and indoor track, olympic size resort style overflow pool, a
rock climbing wall, a huge wieghtroom, indoor/outdoor basketball courts,
soccer classes, and just about any class you would ever even think about
taking, including sailing and scuba diving. There are restaurants, but
they aren't alot of place frequented primarily by students. There are
clubs on campus, always trying to get more support. There is a larger
than usual religous group presence on this campus, even more so than a
political presence which is strange for a public school. Overall, the
social life here is pretty quiet, but if you want to party, there are
always parties being advertised on campus and people are always throwing
house parties, but they usually don't get to rowdy. Oh, and if you find
yourself to stressed during final week, there is a pub on campus. :)
