Irvine is one of the safest cities in America, and the UCI campus is
situated in the heart of a suburban community surrounded by
parks, open space, and the Pacific Ocean. It is simply a great place
to go to school.
The school opened in 1965. Thus, none of the buildings exceed 40
years in age. In addition, waves of recent construction have added a
host of new facilities. The quality of the academic environment
afforded by these new facilities makes UCI one of the top
universities in America.
Undergraduate on-campus housing is guaranteed only to
freshman, and all rooms are doubles. Regardless, this option is
very affordable and provides total immersion in the UCI campus
environment. Upper-division students live in the many apartment
complexes surrounding the university. These buildings are all very
new and still quite affordable to rent for Orange County. When I
graduated from UCI in 2001, the campus was still 50 percent
commuters. No doubt, many students still live and home and drive
in for classes. However, as UCI has matured into a world-class
school, the ratio of commuters has probably dropped.
UCI campus dining provides the best food I've eaten at any college
campus. It is all-you-can eat, buffet style, and it is the best deal in
town.
