During the day it's not a problem, but at night it always pays to know where you're going and how you're going to get there. Campus used to offer an escort service after dark. Housing is always a pinch in Berkeley, but I was fortunate and found a really nice place a block across the border to north Oakland. If I'd had time for a social life, I definitely would have taken advantage of the proximity of San Francisco. But the campus has excellent recreational facilities and four star cultural events. If you're craving ANY kind of cuisine, I'd challenge you to *not* find it in the immediate Bay Area.
