It may take a year or two for students to get used the life at
Berkeley. Because it is such a culturally enriched places, it may be
difficult for students to get accustomed to the "weirdness." There are
many "different" shops around campus, with all sorts of people and
things.
Housing is getting much better. Apartment rates are coming down and it
is easier to find affordable housing around the school. Although there
is an increase in the availability of housing, most of the buildings
are old, so be prepared to see old fashioned stoves, refrigerators,
bathroom tubs, etc.
The school offers many facilities for students to gather and study. The
school library is open until 2am everyday and is 24 hours during
finals. There is also a student union building which has a lounge that
is open 24 hours for study hall.
The neighborhood around the school is fine. However, it is not
recommended for people to walk alone at night. There has been reported
muggings and minor attacks.
There are many restaurants and food courts near campus. Some of the
restaurants open late mostly only on weekends. But, there are pizza and
hot dog places are open late everyday. Also, there are campus
restaurants for students to grab a bite to eat during school hours.
