I went to Cal in 1992-1996 but my brother goes there right now so I
have a lot of insight into the school.
The key to getting into Cal is (obviously) having top grades and test
scores, but also writing in your essays about why you would be a good
fit with Cal. They have a list of what they are looking for right on
their website and students often don't even read them. Why are you
different than every other applicant? What will you bring to the
school? Why Cal? Don't get too creative and write a poem. Write a
well thought out essay that conveys your voice. It will be very
obvious if it is forced. I have heard that essays don't get read if
your grades and test scores aren't at the top. There is no interview.
