The bottom-line reality of those entering and graduation from West Point is a
minimum 5-year service obligation into the armed services, with the vast majority
serving in the United States Army. A handful of cadets choose to serve in the
other services, i.e. Navy, Marines, and Air Force. As far as internship
opportunities, the experience that most correlates to an internship is what is
called CTLT (Cadet Troop Leader Training) where cadets in the summer preceding
their senior year at the academy are able to shadow and often act as a real
second lieutenant in a regular army unit for approximately 30 days, the position
they will be graduate to a year later. This is by far the most rewarding,
realistic experience in gauging what the real army is going to be like. There
are cadets that enter the academy with prior army or other armed forces service
experience while others enter just out of highschool as I did. This "internship"
is valuable as it gives all cadets the unique opportunity to experience the real
army for a short period of time from the perspective of the junior officer, what
all cadets are striving to become.
