I commend Tufts for it??s support of diversity, in everything that it
does. There is a big international faction at the school. Students
arrive every year from all over the world, and can almost always find
representation through one of the many cultural clubs, such as Asian-
American, African-American, Arabic, Armenian, Latino and Indian. Each
club holds at least one big event every year, so you can??t help but be
exposed to all kinds of new eye-opening cultural activities and
traditions. I??ve even seen groups of Falun Gongers meditating on the
quad on more than one occasion.
Other clubs include the Leonard Carmichael Society, an enormous and
powerful charity network of students If you??re ambitious you can start
your own program to help people in need. The Mountain Club also has
clout and offers fun things to do all year round from camping and hiking
to ice fishing and spelunking. There??s even an Oxfam Caf?? that??s
entirely student-run and donates all its profits to Oxfam America.
If you want an on-campus job, Tufts Catering is the best. The pay is
alright, but it can be fun, you meet lots of people and you have a lot
of down time if you want to catch up on school work.
One of the best things about Tufts is that it really makes going abroad
junior year easy. I would say that most students spend at least one
semester off-campus in anywhere from Ethiopia, Chile, Sevilla to Japan.
Even if you??re a pre-med biology major or engineer, the London Abroad
program allows you to take a break from Medford and see the world
without falling behind academically.
Back on campus, frats are found on Frat Row, easily accessible for any
freshman with little else to do on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday night. Sticky floors, beefy bouncers, and
the nastiest beer you can find.
Dating? I estimate there being a low ratio of daters to non-daters.
Don??t know why, except my friends and I have concluded that there??s a
high proportion of weird people at the school. Down to earth,
competitive and now weird. But not weird in a bad way. Just not in
the ??let??s go out?? way. Maybe just hook up until you figure out that
they??re too weird to date.
By senior year once you??re off campus, you??ve exhausted things to do in
the area, so it??s definitely nice to have a car so that you can drive to
bars and restaurants in the city. Scratch that- you need a car, because
the T closes at 12 or 1, leaving you stranded or looking up a cab
company if you want to stay out late, and when you feel the need to
leave Medford. But of course it??s still nice to hang out at the old
haunts in town, (that would be Davis Square) there??s Anna??s Taqueria
(which is actually in Porter Square next door- another reason to have a
car) for big fat wraps filled with beans, rice, meat and anything else
or the Blue Shirt caf?? for big fat wraps filled with anything
vegetarian. For dessert there??s the Crepe Place for savory or sweet
crepes. Mmmm?? usually can??t resist getting both and splitting with
someone. I think the owner??s right out of France. Plus there??s a yogurt
place that??s always changing it??s name- might still be called Denise??s,
for seriously good yogurt. As for bars, there??s a homey Irish Pub
called the Burren which gets packed with Tufts students and local
Irishmen and women on the weekends. A nice mix of young and old
people. Just don??t give out your phone number to any creepy Irishmen.
