Some students from larger cities (i.e. New York and Boston) often
complained of the "lack" of activities in Syracuse, a much-smaller city
by comparison. But I always found stuff to do. There are plenty of
restaurants and bars next to campus on Marshall Street and South Crouse
Ave. Popular hangouts include Varsity Pizza, Faegen's, Maggie's, and
Starbucks. And I'm sure they've gotten a few new places since I
graduated three years ago. Also, be sure to check out Carousel Mall, one
of the largest shopping malls in the nation. It's a convenient bus ride
from campus. If you aren't a bar person like me, this is where you will
like to hang out on the weekends (includes lots of restaurants and
movies theaters).
There is definitely a Greek presence on campus, though most students are
not in a house. When I was there, there was a lot of anti-Greek
sentiment among the non-Greeks. The frats and sororities are there if
you want to join, but you are never pressured to join, or made to feel
left out if you don't. The beautiful Greek houses do add a nice ascetic
to the campus, though. Each house has its own "personality"--SU
definitely has its share of "Animal House" and "snobby-rich-girl" types,
but there are also houses for the down-to-earth and studious.
