Campus is beautiful, and close by to restaurants, bars, and shopping.
Everything is within walking distance (a car is optional, though it will
be very expensive to park one if you do get one). Some have complained
of the campus' proximity to public subsidized housing (aka "the
projects"), but there isn't much interaction between the two. Most crime
is student-on-student. Most thefts are a result of student carelessness,
i.e., not locking their cars or apartments. There was quite a bit of
pandhandling on Marshall Street (near the campus), which was more
annoying than dangerous. My main complaint about campus life was the
noise--blasting music in dorms and from frat houses really got on my
nerves. Overall, a very busy and lively campus.
Also, it gets VERY COLD and snowy in the winter. The winters are
hardcore in Syracuse. Be sure to bring good, warm boots and a coat that
is wind resistant (the wind is fierce up there). Because of its
proximity to Lake Ontario, they get a lot of lake effect snow, in
addition to snow from regular storm systems. If you like snow, it will
be a winter paradise for you. If not, I suggest probably going somewhere
else.
